This is entirely deliberate and makes it dead simple for poor
spellers like myself to get it right (almost) every time.

That or something like it was among the proposals.  But....

When you get down to it, ERR5RS is not, cannot, be an "ultimate"
Scheme, it's just the best compromise Will or anyone else has
thought of to mitigate the nasty schism in the community.
