Basically, you have a bunch of servers that can talk to each other, and users
from those systems can talk betwixt each other. It is much closer to a
real-time e-mail system than anything. If you remember how talk works on UNIX,
then you have the idea.
I don't know how well GTalk handles the conferencing aspects of XMPP, but I
know that you can use other, more full-featured clients to connect using your
Gmail account. You should be able to connect to the conferences service on my
server pretty easily, as I don't have any strange restrictions. Additionally,
once you are there, you can get a listing of the channels that have been
created on my server, which correspond to chat rooms. You should see maybe one
or two, and you can join #SchemePunks.
Of course, we could host the chat room on the SchemePunks servers if someone
wanted to install some Jabber software on the servers.
